Efficient Real-Time Data Offloading for Cost Reduction

BAWAG P.S.K. is a prominent and profitable bank in Austria, with a customer base of over 1.6 million private and business clients. The bank’s strategy focuses on low risk and high efficiency. In order to reduce CPU load on the mainframe and lower costs, the bank sought a technology solution that would allow real-time data offloading from the core database system to a less expensive system while providing read access to the new infrastructure.

Challenge

The increasing transaction load of online banking, mobile banking, and self-service devices resulted in constantly rising CPU costs on the mainframe. A significant portion of this load was due to read-only transactions. BAWAG P.S.K. needed to find a solution to reduce the load on the mainframe and cut costs.

Solution

To address the challenge, BAWAG P.S.K. employed tcVISION for real-time data replication and Apache Hadoop for cost-effective data storage. This approach allowed the organisation to benefit from real-time event handling, stream processing, analytics based on real-time data, and the ability to report and analyse structured and unstructured data. The system can operate on commodity hardware with no scalability limitations. The bank found the costs of tcVISION to be very low compared to the savings achieved by reducing CPU consumption.

Impact

Implementing tcVISION and Apache Hadoop allowed BAWAG P.S.K. to significantly reduce CPU load on the mainframe and lower costs. The bank was also able to benefit from real-time data analytics and reporting capabilities.

Conclusion

BAWAG P.S.K. successfully reduced CPU load and costs by offloading data to a less expensive system in real-time while maintaining read access to the new infrastructure. The bank’s investment in tcVISION and Apache Hadoop allowed for improved efficiency and data analysis, contributing to the overall success of the organisation. The excellent customer support provided during implementation and production also contributed to the project’s success.
